Why Won't My Car Start?

flat battery in red car If your car won’t start then more than likely it’s your battery at fault. However, symptoms are the same for a number of causes so here is a rundown on what you can do yourself. Turn the headlights on and turn the key, if the lights go out then it’s most likely the battery is flat or has reached the end of its life, its use-by-date if you like. If there is no sound at all when you turn the key then maybe the gearshift hasn’t locked into the neutral or park positions thus invoking the safety interlock.

Jump Starting Your Car

If you’re stranded and need a jump-start you can call on a donor to get going again. It can pay to have a professional come out who can diagnose if it’s a flat battery or something more sinister. If you’re sure it’s a flat battery and the battery is in good condition, a jump start
could buy you enough time to get to Highway Auto for a fault evaluation which is a free service to all Highway’s customers.

How to Keep Your Battery Charged

Your battery’s primary job in life is to get your engine started. When your engine sounds sluggish or it’s not catching at all, most times a flat battery is the problem. Here are some tips on how to ensure your car battery is being charged as required.

Does Your Battery Need to be Charged?

If you turn your key and nothing happens, it’s likely you’ve got a flat battery. To avoid being caught out there’s some ways you can pick up the early warnings your battery might fail before it crashes:
  • Your engine cranks slowly and takes a while to start.
  • The ‘check engine’ light comes on.
  • The battery looks swollen, it’s leaking or it’s got low fluid level.
  • Your battery terminals are corroded

My Check Engine Light Is On

Why is my Check Engine Light on? Nothing strikes fear like your check engine light coming on. The symbol you’d like to ignore, but shouldn’t. This warning sign has the potential to keep a minor situation from becoming a major repair — so be sure to listen to your car when it tells you to check the engine. car check engine light on When it finds a problem in the electronic-control system that it can't correct, the computer turns on a yellow warning indicator that's labeled "check engine," "service engine soon" or "check powertrain." Or the light may be nothing more than a picture of an engine, known as the International Check Engine Symbol, perhaps with the word "Check." In addition to turning on the light, the computer stores a "trouble code" in its memory that identifies the source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor or a misfiring engine. The code can be read with an electronic scan tool or a diagnostic computer. You still need an experienced technician to perform the diagnosis to ensure that the cause of the failure is pin pointed so that the replacement components are not damaged again.

Get Expert Electronic Diagnosis for a Permanent Fix

There is more to diagnosing vehicle computer faults than plugging in a code reader. The operator needs to know how to recognise ghost or faulty readings. If the code reader tells the operator to "replace computer" then chances are that is a ghost reading and it would cost you dearly and still not fix the problem.

Highway Auto are the experts at automotive diagnostics. We know how to diagnose quickly and accurately and that will save you lots of money.

The obvious faults associated with Auto electrical system failures:
